Chronology: Germany and the Corona Pandemic 2021

The Coronavirus has killed tens of thousands of people in Germany since it hit the country on January 27th of last year. Hundreds of thousands got infected and the economy took a big hit. In 2021, things are supposed to improve.

January 19th, 2021

On the eve of today’s Corona conference with Angela Merkel and the First Ministers from the states, the participants were part of a hearing with virologists and other experts who reportedly called for a tightening of the existing restrictions, also because of the new Coronavirus mutations that might be spreading in Germany.

At 2:00 p.m. CET, the Corona conference will commence. A prolongation of the lockdown is a foregone conclusion. How exactly the Corona rules will be tightened is hard to tell.

On Friday, more than 165,000 Germans were vaccinated against the Coronavirus, according to the Robert Koch Institute, almost 32,000 more than on Friday. A lack of vaccine doses is the main issue right now.

In their New Year speeches, most First Ministers in Germany discussed Corona. Berlin’s Governing Mayor Müller said the danger posed by the pandemic needed to be taken seriously and following the rules was still important. His Bavarian colleague Markus Söder made clear there was no hope for a quick end of the Corona pandemic. He called the virus “mean”. All First Ministers said the ongoing vaccinations were reason for hope.

Three hundred and thirty-nine days after the first Corona infection case was confirmed in Germany, this is the situation:
