Germany: International Travel in the Corona Crisis is Supposed to Become Easier

The German government is about to change its regulations for travelers. Especially families are supposed to benefit from the amendment when they return from vacations abroad.

Berlin, February 23rd, 2022 (The Berlin Spectator) — Easter is only some eight weeks away. Families are planning trips to Mallorca or other destinations for the holidays. Because of the Corona situation, many Germans did not know whether they would be able to fly, which is why they waited with their bookings. As a result, because so many people booked on short notice, the prices for package vacations increased substantially.

More Dangerous

At least returning to Germany after the vacation is supposed to become easier than it is right now. According to several German-language media reports, the federal government is working on easing the rules. First of all, coming in from ‘High Risk Areas’ is supposed to become easier. Strict rules will still apply when travelers return from ‘Virus Variant Areas’, countries in which new Corona variants are spreading, if those mutations are more dangerous than Omicron.

For now, Children below 12 years of age will be allowed to bypass the quarantine rule when they return from ‘High Risk Areas’, if they get tested for Corona and the result is negative. At this stage, children aged 0 to 5 have to go into quarantine for five days, and kids from 6 to 12 years of age need to be isolated for 10 days. After five days, they can get a “Get-out-of-quarantine-for-free-Corona-test”, just like adults. Since there is no Corona vaccine for these age groups, the German government wants to apply some more fairness here.

Fresh and Negative

Generally, travelers will still need to follow what the Germans call the ‘3G Rule’ when they enter the Federal Republic, meaning they will need to be vaccinated, recovered within the past 180 days, or they will have to provide a fresh and negative Corona test result.

Germany’s list of ‘Virus Variant Areas’ is empty right now, meaning there are none. The number of entries on its list of ‘High Risk Areas’ has shrunk substantially in the past weeks. Until recently, almost the entire world was on the list. Now, it contains 97 countries and the ‘Palestinian Territories’. This is the list:
