Berlin, July 11th, 2026 (The Berlin Spectator) – A hostage situation has been unfolding for several hours at a supermarket in Berlin’s Marienfelde district, where a man is holding a woman against her will inside the store, as police and emergency services remain on site in large numbers overnight.

Berlin Police confirmed the incident to the “Bild” tabloid, saying officers remain on site in large numbers and that the situation was still ongoing as of early Saturday morning. According to the newspaper, the man overpowered the woman shortly after 10 p.m. and has been threatening her since. A police spokesperson told the outlet that the man remains inside the store and that emergency forces are stationed at the location.

A heavily armed Special Weapons and Tactics (SEK) unit has taken up positions outside the Rewe supermarket on Hildburghauser Strasse, with masked officers moving continuously near the entrance. The store remains lit throughout, and the surrounding street has been cordoned off. Additional patrol cars, emergency medical personnel, and an emergency physician are also stationed nearby. Additional police vehicles, including a large personnel carrier, arrived in the early morning hours, underscoring the scale of the response.

Marienfelde, where the supermarket is located, is a residential district in the borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg on Berlin’s southern edge, bordering Brandenburg. It is known as a quiet, largely suburban area, making the standoff an unusual disruption for local residents, many of whom gathered near the police cordon overnight as the operation continued.

Negotiations Underway

Police say they are in direct contact with the hostage-taker and are attempting to resolve the situation peacefully — a standard approach in hostage negotiations, where authorities typically prioritize a non-violent resolution over a forced intervention as long as the hostage’s life is not in immediate danger. The motive behind the incident remains unclear, and no information has been released about the condition of the hostage.

According to “Bild”, residents in the area said the store manager reported having seen a weapon, though police have not confirmed this detail. Investigators are withholding further specifics, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing operation and the risk that released details could complicate negotiations or endanger the hostage.

Witnesses Given Thermal Blankets

Several supermarket employees and customers who were in the store at the time of the incident have remained within the cordoned-off area overnight rather than being sent home, likely so investigators can take statements while the encounter is still fresh in their memory. Emergency responders have provided them with thermal blankets to help them stay warm through the cold overnight hours, and witnesses are expected to be questioned by the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in the coming hours. Until then, they have been able to warm up inside a heated police vehicle stationed nearby.

As of this writing, there is no indication of when the standoff might end, and police have not said whether they consider the situation to be de-escalating.
