Daylight Saving Time: ‘Who has the Time for those Constant Time Changes?’

Just as we had begun to love the “winter time” the Europeans switch to for the cold season, we have to throw it overboard again. Sound the alarm! The time for the next time change has arrived.

Berlin, March 2nd, 2021 (The Berlin Spectator) — It’s TIME. What the Germans call “summer TIME” is already waiting around the corner. Hardly anyone in Europe wants those TIME changes anymore, but the continent sticks to them anyway. C’est la vie. On the other hand: Who has the TIME for those constant TIME changes? Aren’t we busy enough ironing our masks?

Nice Continent

Europe is a nice continent, and the European Union is a useful and important organization, except when it does not act on things. Nobody in the E.U. capitals seems to have the TIME to work on finally getting rid of those TIME changes. Even the European Parliament wants to dump them. Just as they were going to act, the world became rather busy with some virus.

The governments in the member states need to take the final decision. And they have to decide whether it will be “summer TIME” or “winter TIME” they want to stick to for good, once those TIME changes are gone. Hey, guys: Please take a mutual decision. We do not feel like setting our damned watches back and forth every five minutes when we travel in Europe. Thank you.

Big Question

Europe has many friends in the Western Hemisphere. Hi, guys! But why would they switch to what they call Daylight Saving TIME earlier than we do? Is this some kind of a contest? In the United States of America, they will switch in March 14th, 2021, and we, the Europeans, will have to wait until March 28th. Is this what you call justice? The Americans also get to keep their new TIME longer.

Are we ready for the big question? Here we go: What way to we have to turn those clocks and watches? Shall we just pick one or are you going to tell us? Well, yes, we turn them forward. On March 28th, 2021, 02:00 a.m. suddenly becomes 3:00 a.m.. We will sleep an hour less, in theory. When the alarm clock goes off at 6:00 a.m., we will hate that moment even more. And don’t forget to take that dusty Ikea kitchen clock off the wall. Change the TIME, change the batteries and, while you are at it, give it an oil change as well.

TIME Travel

Actually, those TIME changes are a cheap form of TIME travel. Who needs a Flux Capacitator or a black hole? In March 28th, we will travel back to the future, by an hour. Then, on October 31st, we will be travelling back in TIME. Next time we are in the future, we should bring the lottery numbers back to the past, for practical reasons.

By the way: There is hardly anything we have to do, except for being annoyed. Our laptops, desktop computers, Kindles, tablets, smart phones and smart watches will do that TIME change on their own. Our watches and the kitchen clock can wait until the next morning. Do not get up at 2:00 a.m. to turn them forward. That’s an order.
