Germany: Vaccination Opponents Stage Protests, Police Officers Injured

Germany’s Corona infection numbers remain at a very high level, but are decreasing slowly. In several German cities, anti-vaccinationists took to the streets. Police officers were attacked.

Berlin, December 14th, 2021 (The Berlin Spectator) — In several cities, thousands of anti-vaxxers, Corona deniers and other conspiracy theorists took to the streets on Monday night. They mainly protested against compulsory vaccinations that are being discussed in Germany. So far, mandatory Corona immunizations for nurses, caretakers and other employees at hospitals and nursing homes have been approved. This measure will be implemented in March of 2022.

Officers Injured

In Berlin, Rostock, Magdeburg, Mannheim as well as in cities in Saxony and Thuringia, thousands took part in those demonstrations. According to German-language media, the police needed to send many officers to keep the situation under control. In several cases, policemen and policewomen were attacked and injured by protesters. According to witnesses, the Christmas market in Magdeburg was stormed by anti-vaxxers. It was closed as a result. In the course of the pandemic, demonstrating conspiracy theorists have become more violent.

In an interview with ‘Funke Mediengruppe’, Germany’s new Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called on those protesters to distance themselves from far-right extremists and self-proclaimed ‘citizens of the Reich’ who were trying to use Corona denier rallies for their own agenda. Since the first events of this kind took place last year, Nazis have been part of them. In Berlin, more and more politicians are saying online messaging services like Telegram needed to be forced to delete groups in which hatred and agitation were spread.

Omicron Discussed

Germany’s new Health Minister Karl Lauterbach announced, scientists would have more influence in regard to the government’s Corona crisis management. He told the ‘Rheinische Post’ daily, politics needed scientific advice. Today, Lauterbach will be part of the new council of experts the members of which will counsel the cabinet. It includes scientists, including doctors, and politicians. According to the Minister, the effect of booster vaccinations and the danger posed by the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus will be on the agenda.

The Robert Koch Institute’s latest Corona numbers show the infection numbers are decreasing right now. The Seven Day Incidence decreased to 375.0. Today, there are 30,823 new Coronavirus infections. Last Tuesday, there were some 36,000 new cases and the Incidence stood at 432.2. Only yesterday, Saxony and Thuringia had Incidences above 1,000. Both of those federal states just dropped below this mark.

Germany’s Corona hotspot, Hildburghausen county in Thuringia, now has an Incidence level of 1,615.2. Only days ago, it used to be one of two counties that surpassed the 2,000 mark.
