Berlin: Tighter Corona Rules Apply from Today

In Berlin, new contact restrictions are now in place. They apply to vaccinated persons as well. For the unvaccinated, the rules are even stricter.

Berlin, December 28th, 2021 (The Berlin Spectator) — Some of Germany’s federal states put in place new Corona rules on Monday, but most of them did so today, a week after Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the First Ministers decided to implement measures designed to slow down the new Corona wave they are expecting to hit these days. Experts believe the infection numbers could literally explode once Omicron, the latest Corona variant, dominates Germany. To them, the question is not if it will happen, but when exactly.

On Thursday, the Berlin Senate announced it would adopt the contact restrictions Scholz and the other participants of his Corona conference agreed to, including Berlin’s new Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey. There are new restrictions for big events as well, and a special set of rules for New Year’s Eve.

These are the new Corona rules for Berlin that apply from Tuesday, December 28th, 2021:

Contact Restrictions

  • Vaccinated persons and those who recently recovered from COVID-19 may gather in groups of up to 10 people, indoors or outdoors.
  • As soon as at least one unvaccinated person takes part, the contact restrictions become stricter: Persons from one household may gather with up to two persons from up to one more household.

Events

  • Up to 2,000 persons may take part in indoor events, or 3,000 outdoors. All of them need to be fully vaccinated or they have to be individuals who recently recovered from Corona, they need Corona tests with negative results too, and they are forced to wear FFP2 standard masks. But, in order to get a permission for any large event, the promoters have to guarantee they will adhere to even more strict rules. Those include the implementation of a hygiene concept which includes setting up ventilation devices indoors. All of this is for big cultural or sports events.
  • Dance events have been forbidden for a while now, including at discotheques and similar clubs. Berlin’s clubs may remain open if they follow this rule, and if they do not welcome more than 200 guests. Outdoor dance events are now banned as well. Any regular outdoor event (with the exception of large sports or cultural events) may include up to 1,000 people.

New Year’s Eve

  • Until January 1st, 2022, additional restrictions apply. They include a sales ban for firecrackers and similar products. Bangers or fireworks may not be used at 53 locations the Berlin Senate listed. It is a different story in regard to professional fireworks. Here, permissions may be applied for.
  • At the same 53 spots, an assembly ban will be in place. What this means is that the regular contact restrictions apply here (up to 10 vaccinated or recovered persons), as they do everywhere, except at events or at dance clubs without dancing.
