Delta Air Lines to Reconnect Berlin to New York

The rather modest list of direct flights between the U.S. and Berlin’s BER Airport is about to be extended. Delta is already selling tickets from there to J.F.K. Airport in New York City and vice versa.

Berlin, September 27th, 2022 (The Berlin Spectator) — From 2017 to 2019, Delta Air Lines offered direct flights from New York to Tegel Airport in Berlin. At some point, they only were available in summer, when the demand was bigger. Then, Corona hit and grounded most flights. In early 2019, borders were closed and travel restrictions applied. From the persperctive of Delta, those flights to Berlin did not make sense anymore, which is why they were scrapped.

Takeoff in May

Now, Tegel Airport does not exist anymore (read separate feature ‘Tegel Airport: Sixty Years Later, the Last Flight is Gone‘), but Berlin and Brandenburg have a shiny new airport known as BER. This is where Delta will be landing at, and taking off from. The airline is already offering tickets for its first direct flights to and from BER, even though it will take a while before they actually take place. On May 23rd, 2023, the first flight is supposed to take off from BER Airport and race towards New York.

But first, the aircraft that will carry passengers across the Atlantic Ocean, back to America, needs to get here. The first one will be leaving J.F.K. at 5:30 p.m. on May 22nd, 2023, in order to arrive at 7:40 a.m. on the 23rd. Once the plane was refuled and cleaned, it will be returning to New York at 9:40 a.m., where it should arrive at 12:30 p.m. on the same day. It is unclear what kind of ‘equipment’ Delta will use for its Berlin flights.

Düsseldorf and Stuttgart

Berlin is an interesting destination again. First of all, the Corona rules are not that strict anymore, at least for now. Secondly, the Euro has not been cheaper since the new millennium dawned 22 years ago. This makes nice little trips to the German capital even more interesting to Americans. In Berlin, the number of tourists from the U.S. is already on the rise.

It gets better: Delta Air Lines will be offering more direct flights to Germany from its main hub in Atlanta. Three times per week, they will be going to Düsseldorf from May 9th, 2023. Even earlier, from March 26th, 2023, they will have direct flights to Stuttgart, according to a press statement the ailine published. The sky is definitely the limit, also because Delta announced new flights from Atlanta to Endinburgh, from Los Angeles to Paris and London Heathrow, and from New York to Geneva and London Gatwick.

United and Norse

Delta is the third airline to offer direct flights to the United States of America from BER Airport in Brandenburg province. United Airlines has been flying to Newark, New Jersey, since March of this year. Since August, the Norwegian airline Norse has direct flights from BER to John F. Kennedy Airport and LAX Airport in Los Angeles.
