Berlin, July 9th, 2026 (The Berlin Spectator) – Rubén Blades, one of Latin America’s most influential musical figures, returns to Berlin tomorrow for what he has described as his last-ever European tour — and the only German date on it.

The announcement, made back in February, landed hard among fans of Salsa and Latin Jazz. “At my age, you have to face the reality of time and health,” the New York-based singer, songwriter, and actor stated according to German-language media. “So far, thank God, everything is fine, but that can change from one moment to the next,” said Blades, who turns 78 on July 16th. He said he plans to spend more time with his family and friends in his native Panama.

Beyond Berlin, the European leg of the tour also takes Blades through Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, and Spain. His only German stop comes at Berlin’s Tempodrom this Friday, July 10th — his first appearance in the city in four decades. When he last performed there, Berlin was still divided. Blades recalled that at the time, he had said a united Germany was surely every German’s dream. Looking back now, he says the fall of the Berlin Wall proved that the seemingly impossible can happen. That history, he said, made him especially glad Berlin made it onto this tour’s schedule.

Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album

At the Tempodrom, Blades — known for his socially conscious songwriting — will perform with his 20-piece Roberto Delgado Big Band, showcasing material from his latest record, “Fotografías,” which won last year’s Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album. But the show is certain to include his best-known material too, above all “Pedro Navaja.” Released in 1978 and inspired by the Mack the Knife character from Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera,” the track did more than perhaps any other to cement Blades’ reputation as Salsa’s poet laureate. The album it appeared on, “Siembra” (“Sowing”), remains, by most accounts, the best-selling salsa record ever made.

Putting together a setlist for this tour was no simple task, Blades said, noting that he’s released roughly 40 albums over the course of his career. “It’s a real problem, fitting 50 years of a music career into an hour and a half or two hours of a concert.” Audiences, he added, also want to hear material from his celebrated partnership with trombonist and producer Willie Colón, who died unexpectedly this past February — songs like “Pablo Pueblo,” “Plantación Adentro,” “Plástico,” and “Tiburón” are likely to make the cut.

Blades is quick to push back on any notion that this tour amounts to a retirement. He has several non-European shows planned for 2027 and is currently working on two new albums. Film remains part of his life as well — alongside his long-running role in the zombie series “Fear the Walking Dead,” he has appeared in nearly 50 movies over the years. His memoir is also due out next year. Its Spanish-language title nods to the refrain of “Pedro Navaja” — “La vida te da sorpresas,” roughly, “Life has surprises in store for you.”

¡Bienvenido en Berlin, Rubén!
