According to the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, 23,499 people were infected with Corona in the past 24 hours. The number of Corona-related deaths remains high as well.
Berlin, December 4th, 2020 (The Berlin Spectator) — Thirthy-two days into the second lockdown, and two days after the contact restrictions in Germany were tightened more, the number of new Coronavirus cases is still far too high. Within a day, 432 Corona patients died. The government and the country had hoped for a far better situation by now.
1.13 Million Infections
Since the crisis began, there have been a total of 18,034 Corona-related deaths. Since July 10th, it doubled. The total number of infections since January is 1,130,238, the Robert Koch Institute says. With 1,135,740, Johns Hopkins University reported even more. The difference has to do with reporting delays.
In Berlin, the situation had improved to some extent. Now, some of the latest data show a deterioration. The number of persons in the German capital who got infected with Corona in the past 24 hours increased to 1,244. Twenty-three Corona patients died in Berlin since yesterday.
Berlin’s Incidence Number Drops
The good news in Berlin is that the city’s Seven Day Incidence Number dropped down to 179. It had been far higher than 200 before. Levels below 50 are considered sort of safe. The main goal of the restrictions that are in place right now is to decrease the Incidence Number to a level below 50.
Just two weeks ago, two out of twelve districts in Berlin were above 300, what the Incidence Numbers were concerned. Today, none of them is, but four districts are above 200. They are Spandau (284.7), Neukölln (232.8), Reinickendorf (215.5) and Mitte (211.3).
Nightly Curfews in Baden-Württemberg
In Stuttgart, the government of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg announced strict measures for counties in which the Incidence Numbers exceed 200. Those include curfews at night. In the areas in question, residents will only be allowed to leave their homes at night when they need to go to work, come home from work, or in case of medical emergencies.
In Germany, there has not been a rule this strict. The new restrictions will apply in cities like Heilbronn, Mannheim and Pforzheim, where the Corona numbers are high. They will be put in place today, for eight nights, between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m..
In the meantime, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel demanded more support for the World Health Organization (WHO). The pandemic had demonstrated the importance of the organization, she said in a video address for the participants of Corona deliberations that are taking place at the United Nations. According to Merkel, the WHO needs to be able to react to global health threats.
