Berlin Brandenburg Airport has Direct Flight Route to Fort Lauderdale

For the first time ever, there are direct flights to Fort Lauderdale from Berlin, thanks to the Norwegian low-cost airline Norse. The trip from the German winter into the Floridian Sun takes ten and a half hours.

Berlin, December 7th, 2022 (The Berlin Spectator) — The alligators in the Florida Everglades prefer a hot climate. At Cape Canaveral, the engines of rockets that blast off into space produce a lot of heat as well, just like the star known as the Sun. There actually is a reason Florida is called the Sunshine State. While Berliners who stay at home are confronted with temperatures around the freezing point, rain and sleet, the beaches in Florida are crammed. Who wouldn’t want to go there?

Temporary Route

From now on, Norse Atlantic Airways offers three direct flights per week to Fort Lauderdale and back to BER Airport. This seems to be a temporary route though. The last flight leaves on March 24th, 2024, unless they prolong the offer. According to the airline, those flights leave BER on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Berlin Spectator just tested Norse’s booking webpage by picking a flight from Berlin to Fort Lauderdale on December 11th, 2022, and a return flight on December 18th. The total fare for the round trip would have been just above 600 U.S. Dollars (571.77 Euro or 492.66 Pounds Sterling). On December 11th, the first flight leaves at 4:25 p.m. CET and arrives at 9:00 p.m. ET. The return flight on December 18th leaves Fort Lauderdale at 11:00 p.m. ET and arrives at BER at 2:40 p.m. CET the next day.

Perfect Destination

For its flights from Berlin Brandenburg to the United States, Norse uses Boeing 787s, which are also known as Dreamliners. The airline’s CEO Bjorn Tore Larsen said his company was attracting passengers who wanted to travel for affordable prices while enjoying “the comfort and the excellent service aboard our Dreamliner”. Who could resist all of that? He also explained Fort Lauderdale was “the perfect trip destination into the winter Sun”. He is probably right.

For BER Airport, its CEO Aletta von Massenbach stated for many residents in the Berlin region and in all of Germany trips to the United States of America were a dream, and Florida was a place of longing. She said she was glad the long-distance flights offer from BER had been extended. Indeed, Berlin Brandenburg Airport does not have that many intercontinental flights, apart from some to the Middle East.

New York Route

Norse also started daily direct flights from BER Airport to J.F.K. Airport in New York City. The first one left in mid-August. A third direct route from BER to LAX in Los Angeles, which they had announced as well, does not seem to be available right now.
