Berlin: Franziska Giffey and Vladimir Klitschko Open Photo Exhibition on War in Ukraine

‘Kyiv is the Unbreakable Heart of Europe’: This is the title of a photo exhibition at Red City Hall in Berlin. It was opened on Tuesday by Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey and Vladimir Klitschko. His brother Vitaly Klitschko is the Mayor of Kyiv.

Berlin, November 29th, 2022 (The Berlin Spectator) — “I want us to be successful”, Valdimir Klitschko said in Berlin on Tuesday. “I want to see our country live in peace, and I want this to happen soon.” He said life in Ukraine could and would not be stopped, no matter how difficult or cold it was there. The will of the Ukrainian people could not be broken, Klitschko said.

Destruction and Disbelief

He has been in Berlin for well over a week now, where he spoke to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, other ministers, to members of the government party FDP and others. Today, he and Franziska Giffey inaugurated the photo exhibition ‘Kyiv is the Unbreakable Heart of Europe’ at Red City Hall, with impressive pictures shot in the Ukrainian capital and other cities. One of the photos shows a middle-aged man who looks at his destroyed apartment block in disbelief.

On another photograph, a firefighter walks on rubble that used to be a building, until it was flattened in a Russian attack. The building he wanted to save is gone. People helping each other and the horror of Moscow’s war of aggression can be seen on those photos until January 3rd, 2023, Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. CET on the first floor of Red City Hall. Visitors may enter through the main entrance and walk up the stairs. Admission is free.

Sign of Solidarity

Franziska Giffey thanked Vladimir Klitschko. She said it was important to show those photographs in Berlin, the city of freedom. They were a sign of solidarity. The fight the Ukrainians were fighting also protected the Western Europeans, who were living in peace today. Ukraine was fighting for the values that united “all of us”, the Governing Mayor told her guests.

According to her, Berlin has provided first care to 350,000 Ukrainian refugees who arrived since Russia started its attack on February 20th, 2022. Some 100,000 of them chose to stay in the German capital. Mrs. Giffey said it was important to keep on donating to Ukraine. She thanked the many Berliners who accommodated war refugees in their homes.

Air Defense

Klitschko is representing his brother Vitaly during this trip to Germany. His message is clear: “My appeal to all politicians, but also to the entire population: Please do not forget us. Please do not stop your support”, he said. “Please do everything for Ukraine. We are very grateful to Germany, especially for the ‘Iris T’ air defense system. But we urgently need even more support, both humanitarian and military. Only with more military support we can quickly liberate the whole country.”
