Germany Grants More Rights to Vaccinated Persons

Individuals who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and some former Corona patients now have more rights. Both the Bundestag and the Bundesrat approved new regulations which will kick in tomorrow.

Berlin, May 8th, 2021 (The Berlin Spectator) — In Germany, people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 will have more freedoms. So will former Corona patients. The new regulation will be put in place as soon as tomorrow, on Sunday, May 8th, 2021.

It applies to these groups:

> Those who have been vaccinated completely, 15 days after they got their last required shot.

> Former Corona patients who tested positive between 28 days and six months ago, and who do not have symptoms.

No Curfews for Vaccinated Persons

These two groups will have the following rights:

> There are no restrictions for meetings or gatherings with vaccinated or cured persons only.

> In meetings or gatherings which include people who have not been fully vaccinated, the vaccinated and cured participants do not have to be counted.

> Curfews do not apply to them.

> Restrictions regarding contactless sports do not apply to them.

> They may enter shops and go to hairdressers or zoos without getting tested for Corona first.

> They do not have to go into quarantine when they enter Germany, unless they come in from a ‘Virus Variant Country’ like Brazil, India or South Africa.

But the two groups do have to wear masks and keep their distance, just like everyone else. And they need to get tested for Corona in case they show typical COVID-19 symptoms.

Immunization Passports

The city state of Berlin voted for the new regulation at the Bundesrat. According to Health Senator Dilek Kalayci, some 482,000 Berliners will benefit. In the German capital, there are 377,000 residents who got both required vaccination shots and 105,721 persons who tested positive for Corona between 28 days and six months ago. Of course, those numbers are constantly increasing. Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller asked vaccinated persons and former Corona patients to bring along their immunization passports or certificates by their doctors anywhere they go.

For the police, the new regulation causes more work. When they check people at night, during those nightly curfews, they will have to read more documents and check their authenticity. But soon, the curfews might not apply anymore in many federal states, including Berlin. In the capital, the Seven Day Incidence number stands at 97.0. If it keeps this level for five consecutive business days, the city state will get rid of its ’emergency brake’ rules, including the nightly curfews.

Broken Wave

In Germany, ten federal states still have Incidences above 100. Six of them, almost the entire north of the country, are below 100. “The third Corona wave seems to have been broken”, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Friday. Indeed, there are good news. Those include the dropping Corona infection numbers and the headway the vaccination campaign is making. In regions with Incidences below 100, opening outdoor tables at restaurants is warranted, according to the government, as long as people continue following the Corona rules and limit their contacts.
